Seniors Out and About in the Twin Cities: North Metro wine and apples

It's fall and a time when we start to prepare for the winter season ahead.  We have already experienced some of the white stuff–way too early–but our fickle weather will likely give us many chances to get outside as a family.  Taking a quick drive east from the north metro offers some great options for the whole family, including senior loved ones.

Friends at beautiful Rustic Roots Winery

Aamodt's apple orchard is located just outside of the bustling town of Stillwater.  Stillwater is generally packed with tourists and locals all summer but during fall, especially when the leaves have turned, is a great time to check out the small city and what it has to offer.  The crowds have thinned but the restaurants and shops are still open and hungry for customers.  If this is as far as you get on your outing there are a number of very good restaurants on Stillwater's main drag (Hwy 95 St. Croix Scenic Byway) as you drive through town and more choices a city block in both directions.  Stillwater has too many options to really elaborate on any one of them--and you won’t go hungry in Stillwater!  Even though the buildings are older most establishments have first-floor seating areas and bathrooms that are fairly accessible for those with mobility issues.

After having a scrumptious lunch in Stillwater head north on Hwy 95 to start your short trip to Aamodt's apple farm.  This has been a longtime family favorite of people from all over the northern metro. If it’s time for dessert you can find apple pies, apple cider, and more lunch-type food like apple brats–more apples I'm sensing a theme.   Aamodt's does have wine from their own vineyard, "St. Croix Vineyards" available for sale along with many non-alcoholic options.  Apple picking and hay rides are available during certain times–check their website for details.  Aamodt's facilities have handicapped parking and ramps to ease getting inside.

If wine is something your family is interested in there are also several wineries in the area.  Rustic Roots Winery is located just a little further up 95 just outside the town of Marine on the St. Croix.  Open more on the weekend this winery has spectacular views of the valley and a good selection of wines to taste and perhaps bring a bottle home.  The facility is set up safely for most mobility issues however the tiered terrace outside may be a bit of a challenge.  While the grapes have been suffering here for several years the winery facilities were established in 2020 during COVID.  In case you have a non-wine drinker they also offer local craft brews along with non-alcoholic beverages.  They currently have food trucks or charcuterie to enjoy with their wine.  7 Vines Winery is just up the road on Hwy 96 in Delwood.  The first grapes were planted here in 2012 and the beautiful facility is located next to Delwood Country Club.  You can enjoy the award-winning wines and the wonderful atmosphere most days until about 9 pm.  Checking out the website is generally a good idea to make sure they are open at your desired time.  You can also make reservations for a guided tour with wine pairings.  Such fun!  The location is handicap accessible.Willow Tree Winery is a close-by wine option to Eveland Farms in Andover and the tasting room is open year around.  They offer samples and sell wine by the glass or by the bottle--samples are free.  This location has a nice level parking lot and is conducive to those with mobility issues.  Established in 2003 by Jim and Barb Szurek, it started out as a retirement hobby and soon became a family business. Jim and Barb operate the winery with help from their son and his family as well as many friends who pitch in along the way.  A very nice place to start or end your northern Twin Cities fall wine and apple excursion!

Eveland Family Farm in Andover, Minnesota has Tuesday as senior day and is open from 1 PM to 7 PM right up to Halloween.  The farm is still functioning and located right next to Andover High School with several things to enjoy.  There is no cost for admission to the farm where you can go to the pumpkin patch, check out the wide variety of squash, gourds, corn stalks, and straw to do some of your own seasonal decorating, or eat at home!  Perhaps the family event is decorating!  Eveland farms offer hayrides for an extra cost.  Enjoy an open exploration of the farm and its many inhabitants, which include llamas, alpacas, goats, pot-bellied pigs, and more.

A lovely picnic shelter is available whether you bring your own food or purchase concessions at the farm.  They have bathrooms available.  Some of the ground is hilly and it can get quite busy so watch your loved ones that might have mobility challenges.
