When it comes to finding resources the internet is ladened with opportunity. When it comes to seniors, sometimes the information isn't quite so easy to find or the services have not started up again since the pandemic. Because there is so much information online, we are providing some typical information for people that are planning to age in place.
Paying for Senior Housing
When I first started working with seniors over 15 years ago, one of my business coaches suggested I change my mindset about cost. He said, “Decisions about senior living choices are generally the most expensive thing they will ever purchase.” This is very true today. How to pay for those choices is difficult because none of us know how long, how severe, or how fantastic our life journey will be. Plus how that will affect the place we decide to age.
If you are seeking public funding to help you all residents in Minnesota need a MnChoices assessment. There is a wide range of programs that seniors may be eligible for. The process will also determine eligibility for financial assistance.

Other types of financial assistance might come from the VA for veterans and their families or a foundation like MS or ALS. In the case of veterans, this process is handled by the local County Veterans Services Officers.
Caregiver Support Groups
Most seniors receive support from their families as they age. Often family caregivers need support too. Caregiver support groups meet regularly to build that support, and comfort and share information about caregiving issues. In-Person, Virtual, and Phone options are available. We also have multiple blogs on this subject and you can download a great tool that is all about taking care of yourself as a family caregiver. I highly recommend you get this free resource to help you navigate the sometimes difficult waters of being the go-to person for a senior in your life.

Alzheimer's Support
One of the most difficult things any family can go through is dealing with Alzheimer’s. There are many resources for related to Alzheimer's. We created a general resource guide for the Twin Cities area a few years ago. Anyone dealing with Alzheimer's should also be aware of the Minnesota Alzheimer’s Association for both general information and to stay up to date with what might be new in the fight against Alzheimer's.
Transportation Services
If someone decides to age in place transportation can become an issue. Family members often provide the necessary rides to doctors and other professionals but they could be overwhelmed. If that happens there are many programs for seniors to get rides. In Anoka County Medlink is offered by volunteers to help seniors. In Washington County, discounted rides can be scheduled with DCP Transportation services. Chisago County is served by Arrowhead Transit while Sherburne County has TriCap Transportation. The metro area is covered by Metro Mobility. Don’t forget to check the requirements and availability with each provider you’re considering for a ride. Our blog gives more information on specifics regarding transportation and ideas for people with special needs–like scooters, electric wheelchairs, and curb vs. inside-the-door drop-off practices.
Senior Volunteers Helping Seniors
Years ago we learned that seniors generally look out for other seniors whenever they can. We were collecting food during the holidays for seniors that needed help. We had collection centers all over the metro and in all sorts of different environments. Grocery stores, car dealerships, libraries, senior centers, and senior buildings. The senior centers and senior buildings packed their food bins to the max! If you need help with home maintenance, minor handyman work, lawn care, or things like that it’s very possible your county may have a senior helping seniors program. I found successful searches by searching (senior volunteer services for seniors in (your county name here).
Recreational Opportunities
If you determine you wish to age in place at your residence don’t forget your need for having fun and socializing with people your age. Seek out senior centers near your home and get there as often as you can. There is a huge psychological benefit to be gained by being with other people! If you have been to one facility and didn’t like it–try another one. You can search (senior center near me) chances are several will come up. Families might also want to look at our “Out and About Twin Cities” blogs that have a variety of ideas for seniors getting out in the community with the entire family.
You can age in place and live a full and vibrant life!
